What's the best environment for allowing a beginner rider to ride a new horse?

we just bought an 8 yr old gelding who is gentle and well-broke, but we have a young child (9 yrs old) who has taken lessons who will ride it. we are housing it with a two yr old mare (good dispostion but loves to bolt and run) and an old shetland stud (who is quite contrary). should i put these other two in the corale while she's riding?What's the best environment for allowing a beginner rider to ride a new horse?
Your are going to want to put them in a mother pen. riding in a pasture where there are other horses is unsafe for a child. Sometimes their horse can get spooked more easily, and sometimes they want to play more if the other horses are running around. To keep your horse in ';tune '; with what you are asking i would pen up the others. Also you might have a situation called ';barn sour';, and they don't want to leave their ';friends';. This makes it difficult to control or even enjoy a ride on your horse. Let her ride the horse in a smallish space with no other horses that might be distracting. She should practice like this for a while before trying to ride with the other horses around, especially a stallion (even a small one).





Can you keep the others in their stalls during lesson time,


or let lessons happen in a round pen while they are at pasture?
I'd keep them out of the way while she's riding, particulary when the new horse and your kid are getting to know each other - the less distractions for both of them the better.
It depends if he/she is an experienced rider or not. I would tend not to put them in because they could be a bad influence on your gelding (especially the mare.) I would think it would be best not to put them in unless there are 2 experienced horse handlers in with them ready to hold them if they get out of hand.
You should definately keep the other 2 away while she is riding.
I WOULD DEFINATELY KEEP THEM SEPERATED, HORSES TEND TO ACT LIKE ONE ANOTHER, A FOLLOW THE LEADER TYPE THING. IF YOU HAVE A ROUND PEN I WOULD TRY WORKING WITH YOUR GELDING THERE, IT'S A SMALLER, SAFER AREA. WORK WITH HIM DAILY GETTING HIM USED TO YOUR CHILD AND BEING IN THAT KIND OF ENVIORNMENT. THE LONGER YOU WORK WITH HIM THE BETTER HE WILL BE FOR YOU. OVERALL IT WOULD PROBABLY BE YOUR SAFEST BET, FOR YOUR HORSE AND CHILD.
with a new horse it is best to ride it in a small area without other horses, especially if the two year old mare loves to bolt. If that horse decides to bolt while your child is riding it may trigger the gelding to run with her causing a bad situation.
The best bet is to begin riding in a small open space that is inclosed by some form of gate and is away form any other horse or animals. This way your horse is in no surrounding in which it will get spooked etc. Good luck with ur riding
